Graduates will have underpinning knowledge of exercise training principles and concepts, and the skills and knowledge to adapt and deliver exercise programmes suitable for individuals within the general population

Graduates will be able to:
  • deliver safe and effective exercise programmes, including prescreening, within own scope of practice and industry code of ethics;
  • apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology to adapt and deliver safe and effective exercise programmes to individuals;
  • adapt programmes for apparently healthy people and common at risk groups using exercise science and testing;
  • apply motivational and communication techniques to enhance individual participant commitment to a personalised exercise programme;
  • apply a health and wellness framework and evidence-based nutrition principles to support a personalised exercise programme and recommend referral pathways to allied health professionals;
  • use marketing and business tools and techniques to support business practices as an exercise professional.
NZ Register of Exercise Professions (REPs) recognised qualification

The aim of the programme is to develop personal trainers who can safely and effectively facilitate exercise programmes with individuals from the general population to a level acceptable to and acknowledged by the NZ Register of Exercise Professions (REPs).

Graduates will automatically qualify for REPs registration at Personal Trainer level.

Entry Criteria

Entry to the programme is open.

If there are more applicants than space, candidates who are currently working in a fitness environment will take precedence over those who aren’t.  See selection criteria below.

Selection Criteria

Where the number of applicants is greater than the number of study places available preference will be given to candidates with the following: currently working in the fitness environment; a demonstrated interest in working in the fitness industry; a graduate of the National Certificate in Fitness (Exercise Consultant) (Level 3); references from a school principal or a current or past employer; attestation from a kaumatua or equivalent community leader.

Candidates who are currently working in a fitness environment will take precedence over those who aren’t.

Employment Pathway

Although this programme is primarily aimed at those who wish to work as personal trainers, graduates can also be employed or self-employed in roles such as: exercise consultant, community exercise instructor, and team training instructor.  In the future graduates may wish to seek out more senior roles within the fitness industry such as senior personal trainer roles, personal training manager, gym manager and/or owner.

Education Pathway

This qualification provides a pathway to, and is a prerequisite for, the New Zealand Certificate in Exercise (Level 5) [Ref: 3564]; and shares some common competencies with the New Zealand Certificate in Freestyle Group Exercise (Level 4) [Ref: 3565] which may be used by learners to expand their skill and knowledge base.
