{fa-book } ASSESSMENT POLICY & PROCEDURES

All courses provided by Exercise Academy will have assessment tools. These tools may be written, practical, or a combination of both. The assessment tools are designed to confirm that you are able to competently conduct the elements of the course and meet the course objectives. Access to the assessment tools is within the course in your online learning centre.

You are encouraged to always keep in mind that the assessment tool reflect the specific requirements of the career they have selected. By achieving competency in each of the assessment tools, you are ready and eligible to perform those elements in the workplace.

The concept of competency focuses on what is expected of an employee in the workplace rather than the learning process, and embodies the ability to transfer and apply skills and knowledge to new situations and environments.

New Zealand qualifications are based on competency achievement against the learning outcomes that collectively meet the graduate profile outcomes. Assessment against the outcomes endeavor to advance quality and consistency in current and future work practices. The assessment guidelines provide overall directions to learners, trainers and assessors on how, when and under what conditions the assessment will occur. The assessment guidelines also articulate the qualifications and training requirements for trainers and assessors.

You are required to ensure:

  1. You can provide a duplicate copy of your assessment if requested (this is a requirement).
  2. All written assessments must be submitted as a typed document and uploaded into the online learning centre (unless otherwise stated).
  3. All completed marking criteria sheets for practical assessment must be scanned onto your computer, saved and uploaded into the online learning centre.
  4. All practical assessment must be viewed and signed off by:
    • An Assessor during an Assessment Day, or
    • An Assessor via a video submission
  5. If you are completing your practical assessment via video recording, you will need to:
    • upload the videos into the online learning centre, or
    • transfer the data onto a digital medium, such as a USB and send (registered post recommended) to our physical address (18 Barrys Point Road, Takapuna, North Short, Auckland). Please note that your media device will not be returned.

If you do not understand what is expected in any of the assessment tools, we recommend you discuss the requirements of the assessment with your tutor as soon as possible. Tutors may be contacted via This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Assessment Requirements

A very practical learning programme, the following methods of assessment will be used in the NZ Certificate in Exercise (Level 4) programme:

  • Written or oral tests for the theoretical learning
  • Practical demonstrations
  • Trainer observation and use of checklists
  • Projects using workplace situations and/or role-play/simulations
  • Written assignments or Research assignments
  • On job practice or Work placement practice
  • Naturally occurring evidence

You must pass each assessment to complete the programme. There are no grades, just competent or not yet competent. If you are not yet competent then your tutor will deem that Further Evidence is Required (FER). You will get an opportunity to provide further evidence and complete the assessment.

Students are entitled to one reassessment opportunity during the course for any non- achieved assessment. A formal application for reassessment must be lodged within ten days of receiving the result of an assessment.

Assessment Marking Procedure

Exercise Academy will aim to have all assessments marked within three (3) weeks of submission. Assessment will either be marked as competent or not yet competent. Once your assessment has been marked, your results and feedback will appear in your online grade book.

If you do not reach 100% for any assessment tool, you will be given detailed feedback from the assessor and the opportunity to re-submit the assessment tool. You are given the opportunity to sit each of your assessments a total of 3 times. On the rare occasion a student finds they are unable to meet assessment competency after three (3) attempts, additional assessments will be marked and will incur an administration fee of $75.00 per assessment item.
